Memorial Gatherings to Be Held for Daniela Benavides and Cameron Johnson

January 8, 2016  | 2 min read

As a community, we continue to pray for the families and friends who are grieving the sudden loss of two of our students, Daniela Benavides and Cameron Johnson. At times like this it’s important to gather together for support and remembrance.

On Wednesday, January 13, the Chaplain’s Office invites all University community members to come together at 5:30 PM in Elkins Auditorium for a special time of prayer and remembrance.

University faculty and staff are also working closely with friends of Daniela and Cameron to plan student-led memorial gatherings. On Monday, January 11, the Psi Upsilon fraternity invites friends of Cameron to join them for a memorial service at 5:30 PM in the Fireside Room. On Tuesday, January 12, residents of the White House invite friends of Daniela to join them in the Fireside Room at 8 PM for a time of remembrance. University counselors and Chaplain’s Office staff will be present at these gatherings to provide care and support. All members of the University community are welcome to attend.

As Cameron was planning to continue his study abroad experience in Pepperdine’s Buenos Aires Program this spring, the Buenos Aires Program staff will hold a memorial service in Buenos Aires for their students, faculty, and staff at the beginning of their term.

This is an especially difficult time with the loss of two members in our community at the beginning of the new year. Please continue to look out for each other and refer those who need additional support to the Counseling Center (310.506.4210) or the Office of the Chaplain (310.506.4275).

Take heart in knowing that God’s love will sustain us during this difficult time. Please pray that the family and friends most impacted will feel an extra measure of comfort and support through our community gatherings and prayers.

Sincerely,

Mark Davis
Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Student Affairs
